With Teachers’ Day approaching (15th), Yangpa talked of her feelings of gratitude for her former teacher.
Recently, Yangpa was asked to perform at the Teachers’ Day special ‘Student-Teacher Concert’ by KBS and she chose her 12th grade homeroom teacher as the most memorable teacher she’s had.
Yangpa debuted in the K-pop industry in 1996 as a high school student and experienced instantaneous popularity, which also made it impossible for her to lead a normal life at school. In her final year of high school, she was unable to show up to class most of the time from March to May in 1997 as she was busy performing.
Even when she was at school, those around her were unreceptive of her. As students would flock to her classroom to get a signature, Yangpa ended up becoming a nuisance to her fellow classmates who were preparing for college. This even resulted in mothers at their PTA meeting complaining and suggesting that Yangpa move schools. Yangpa was even bullied and outcast by her peers.
But she was able to overcome these difficult times because her homeroom teacher and principal took an active approach in protecting her.
What is interesting is that Yangpa’s 12th grade homeroom teacher is none other than the father of TVXQ’s Choikang Changmin.
Yangpa said, “Since my graduation, I haven’t been able to visit him. I learned that his son became a member of TVXQ through my friends,” and “I didn’t get to meet TVXQ till recently when I appeared on the same show as them and I finally got the chance to meet Choikang Changmin.”
She continued to say, “When I talked about his father as a teacher, Choikang Changmin smiled and said, ‘My father always told me that I should follow your example because you were a good student and you could also sing well.’”
When Yangpa and Choikang Changmin’s special connection was revealed, KBS stepped forth and contacted her homeroom teacher. It was found that he still teaches students at a high school in Seoul and he has been debating on whether or not he should appear on TV as his son is a famous celebrity.
Yangpa said, “I was so happy when I heard that his wife’s favorite song is my recently released number ‘It Hurts’,” and “I’m planning on visiting my homeroom teacher in the near future and sharing stories of the past with him.”
